Marxism-Leninism

Marxism-Leninism is a communist ideological stream that emerged as the mainstream tendency among the Communist parties in the 1920s as it was adopted as the ideological foundation of the Communist International during Stalin’s era. The term is derived from Karl Marx, a German philosopher whose ideas are credited as the foundation of modern communism; and, the Bolshevik communist leader, Vladimir Lenin.

In the Russian Revolution of 1917, Lenin and the Bolsheviks launched a coup to overthrow the ruling provisional government in Petrograd, Russia. The Bolsheviks appointed themselves as leaders of various government ministries and seized control of the countryside, establishing the Cheka to ruthlessly quash dissent, paving the way for the establishment of the USSR (Soviet Union).
